OUR TAKE

“Displaying facility with every material he encounters, Jeff Martin continues to push the boundaries of design with his furniture, finishes, sculptures and collectible design objects with his merry band of collaborators.”

NEED TO KNOW

  • recent expansion includes their studio glass company, Excavated Vessels, and gallery space Alpenglow Projects, representing emerging and established designers
  • to make the Excavated Vessels series, Martin uses remnants of waste from furniture production as a base material for an invented process,  combining unlikely and disparate elemental materials
  • projects range from furnishing a private ski club to custom designs for Canadian embassies around the world, with JMJ pieces included in the Musee des Beaux Arts Montreal and the Museum of Glass

Jeff Martin is a contemporary furniture designer based in Vancouver, Canada. His small studio serves as an exploratory research/design lab and manufacturing facility. Best known for their design systems Shaker, Painted, Neolith, and Excavated, the studio at Jeff Martin Joinery analyzes the intrinsic nature of elemental materials and responds to the material characteristics in obscure and invented methods.

Not exclusively craft, nor art, nor design the practice is best understood as a hyper focused meditation on all of these, without defining itself by any of them.
